Election season means campaigning, rounding up friends to vote, and getting your candidate's message out for everyone to hear. Inspire your friends to elect vanarchs you can respect, who'll do what's needed to keep those specialty stores open and tax rates fair.

Or, if you'd rather, now's the time to start buying votes (or selling yours), declaring war on a rival guild, and assassinating the opposing candidate (again and again, if you like). Buy yourself the access you need to make sure that when deals get done, you get your cut.
